This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of Loma Vista Nursery in Ottawa, Kansas. President Lyndsi Oestmann is more than proud of its history. The wholesale company was started by her father Mark Clear who grew up with a strong love for growing plants before his successful career as a professional baseball player. Mark is a former two-time All Star relief pitcher having played for the California Angels, Boston Red Sox and Milwaukee brewers. In the early 80s during the off-season he spent time in Southern California successfully co-operating Loma Vista Nursery before selling his interest to begin the nursery in Kansas.
Lyndsi grew up at the nursery, she worked in just about every position, including accounting, and learned by example from her parents the amount of work and commitment involved. She planted one of the first crop of trees at the new nursery and found that working in the field removing suckers and pruning trees were some of her favorite tasks.
Today Loma Vista has 40 full-time employees, 98 in-season. At their 300-acre facility in Ottowa, Kansas they grow pot-in-pot trees, shrubs, roses, grasses, perennials and groundcovers. At their 600 ‘Field of Trees’ acreage in Willow Springs, Kansas they grow field-grown shade and ornamental trees, upright junipers and spruce, and many other deciduous and evergreen varieties.
“In late 2018, Loma Vista Nursery became one of the first in the industry to receive Systems Approach to Nursery Certification (SANC), administered by the National Plant Board. The program is voluntary, audit-based and designed for production nurseries to reduce pest risks associated with the movement of nursery stock. With distribution throughout the Midwest to independent garden centers, landscape contractors and wholesale distributors, clients can feel confident about Loma Vista Nursery’s commitment to healthy plants, strong customer relationships, and community and industry involvement.”
Loma Vista Nursery believes in the power of community and organizations like Garden Centers of Colorado. “We are better together.”
